It all happened in 1978…

  • People started listening to music on a portable music device called a “Walkman.”
  • Louise Brown, the world’s first test tube baby, was born.
  • Paul Soglin was Madison’s mayor – the first time around.
  • The Eagles’ “Hotel California” won record of the year at the Grammys.
  • Everybody was reading “The World According to Garp.”
  • And, on January 19, Leanne Starr and Gary Starr took a risk and opened the doors of Drake & Company.

The fledgling professional staffing firm started out with nothing more than a pen, a pad of paper and a telephone. So, Leanne put her phone on the window ledge, sat on the floor and started making calls to Madison. Wisconsin employers. By day’s end, she had the first of what eventually became thousands of positions to fill.

Since then, Drake & Company Staffing Solutions has grown to a thriving firm with two fully equipped offices (including desks and chairs!). Recently, a new job applicant mentioned that Drake & Company found work for her mother in the 1980s and her grandmother, back in the late 1970s!

Through its dedication to matching candidates’ skills and personalities with the needs of businesses, Drake & Company has been effectively placing Madison’s professional workforce for three generations.
